Professor Terry Au graduated from Tsuen Wan Government Secondary School in 1978 and continued her education at Harvard University and Stanford University, where she obtained her PhD in Psychology in 1987.  She was Associate professor at Brown University and Professor at UCLA, prior to joining the University of Hong Kong in 2002 as Chair Professor of Psychology and serving as Head of the Department of Psychology from 2003-2005 and 2007-2008. Since 2018, she has also held the Karen Lo Eugene Chuang Professorship in Diversity and Equity.

Professor Au has wide experience in human resources management in the University, having served as Chairperson of the Promotion and Tenure Panels of the Faculties of Education, Dentistry, and Business & Economics, as well as Member of Promotion and Tenure Panels of the Faculties of Arts and Social Sciences, and the University Selection and Promotion Committee.  With her rich cross-disciplinary human resources experience, she was appointed to be the interim Vice-President and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic Staffing and Resources) in January, 2016.

She is a developmental psychologist by training, and her research interests include: language and conceptual development; health, science, and language education; developmental challenges such as childhood anxiety and autism.  Her research has been funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) in the U.S., as well as the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong (RGC-HK), with her as the Principal Investigator (PI) or Co-PI. 

She has contributed to research assessment internationally as Associate Editor of the premier journal Developmental Psychology, as research grant review panel member for NIMH, NIH, RGC-HK, and as Founding Chair of the Assessment Panel of the three Competitive Research Funding Schemes for the Self-financing Degree Sector of the RGC-HK.  She was also a member of the Social Sciences Panel in the 2014 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) in Hong Kong.

Her other public service includes serving on the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong and the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fund Council.  For the HKSAR Government, she has served on the Barrister Disciplinary Tribunal Panel, Judiciary; the Administrative Appeals Board, the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) Operation Review Committee, and the Family Council.
